Juicy, satisfying, and made with simple ingredients.
A homemade alternative with lean beef, fresh vegetables, and controlled portions.
Ingredients:
- 4 oz (113 g) lean ground beef (90% lean)
- 1 whole-wheat hamburger bun
- 1 slice tomato
- 1 lettuce leaf
- 1 thin slice red onion
- 1 slice reduced-fat cheddar cheese, optional
- 1 tsp olive oil, divided between cooking as needed
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 tsp mustard, optional
Instructions:
- Shape the patty: Gently shape the ground beef into a patty slightly wider than the bun. Avoid overworking the meat.
- Season: Sprinkle both sides with salt and black pepper.
- Cook the burger: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add a little olive oil if needed and cook the patty for about 4–5 minutes per side, depending on thickness. Cook ground beef to an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
- Toast the bun: Lightly toast the whole-wheat bun in a dry skillet or toaster.
- Assemble: Spread mustard on the bun, then add the beef patty, cheese if desired, tomato, lettuce, and onion.
- Serve: Enjoy immediately with a side of oven-baked potatoes or a fresh salad.
Pro Tip: Choose lean ground beef and add plenty of fresh vegetables for a satisfying burger. For extra flavor, season the patty with garlic powder and smoked paprika.
